Welcome to the home on the web for the Decoding the Weaponizing of Pop Culture on WhatsApp in Singapore and Malaysia project.
This site aims to provide updates on the progress of the research project which began in January 2019, as well as serve as a repository for the findings and outputs generated from the investigation.
This project focuses on Singapore and Malaysia to understand how internet popular culture is being weaponised on WhatsApp by the state, political parties, grassroots groups, and corporations. It is a collaboration between researchers from five universities across Australia, Malaysia and the United Kingdom, and was awarded the Facebook Integrity Foundational Research Award.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Conference for eDemocracy and Open Government (CeDem Asia 2020) in Kuala Lumpur has been postponed to January 2021. As such, the new abstract submission deadline is now Oct 4, 2020.
Dr. Natalie Pang, Dr. Crystal Abidin and Dr. Amelia Johns are the track chairs for the Weaponizing Digital Media track at the conference. For more details on what presentations would fit best for this track, and information on the conference more generally, visit the conference website.
